This project, a composite artwork including various artistic genres,
is an interactive installation with diverse images, sounds, and a concrete poetry book in an interactive gallery space .

I mainly used “Action Script 3.0” in Flash to fade in and out images with sounds. I also used “Processing script” and “Arduino script” corresponding to action script for interactive installation. “Arduino Board” and “Bread Board” with a lot of wire and multiplex chip were required to connect a laptop with a book device. In my poetry book device, I used copper plates, electronic wires, reed switches, and magnets. Electronic requirements are a laptop, a book device, a table lamp, speakers, and a projector with screen.

Poems_Daymare

Concept

This project, “Daymare” is an interactive installation with diverse images, sounds, and a concrete poetry book. Viewers can experience visual and acoustic elements on the screen while appreciating two poems, pressing poetic words, and turning pages. Whenever one turns the next page, one can find a concrete poem in the book and a new background image with music on the screen. If a viewer presses a marked poetic word among the poetic words in the book, a new image with sound joins the background image on the screen.
This project is a kind of interdisciplinary composite artwork, which includes elements of diverse artistic genres through interactive installation. I am interested in various artistic worlds such as paintings, photography, musicals, digital imaging, and literature. Thus, I extracted necessary elements from them for my artwork. There are many symbolic icons, signs, sounds, and letters in my artwork. The combination of these diverse elements creates synesthesia where many senses cross and intersect.

Intention

In Ancient Greece and medieval Europe, most arts were composite artworks. Music, dances, plays, painting, and literature were performed in one place. However, from the modern age, all the areas of art started to separate independently. But, in this contemporary digital age, the phases of the modern era have changed back. Most artistic genres, such as movies, musical, and web art can be realized in the digital arena through digital high technology. The more technology develops, the more art will combine various digital media and artistic areas. Thus, I would like to combine diverse artistic practices into a digital space. This is a new artistic genre, The “Composite Art” of this digital era. I am a sort of ‘shaman’ leading viewers to strange and mysterious worlds by using digital technology.

Visitors’ Experience-Interactive Scenario

A dim light leaks from a small door. There is a big screen with a title and music inside. The small Independent room, like a small theater stimulates viewers’ curiosity. There is a concrete poetry book on a desk with a chair. If a viewer takes a seat and turns the next page, he or she can find a concrete poem, which is a visual image, organized by letters. Simultaneously and automatically, a mysterious background image with music appears on the screen.
If the viewer presses a certain word among the poetic words in the book, a new image with sound joins the background image on the screen. The sense, feeling, and emotion of the poetic words are arranged on the screen through montage. If the viewer turns the page again, he or she can see another poem in the book and a new screen image with new music. As such, whenever the viewer turns the pages one by one, different poetry, images, and sound can be explored simultaneously in one space. They can experience dreamy and unfamiliar feelings and synesthesia in interactive theater.
